Steffie's Story

five decades of progress & innovation

1952 Council incorporates and starts educational programs
1958 Council models vocational programs
1967 Council opens Sheltered Workshop program
1972 Council formalizes Parent Outreach program and develops educational programs for children with severe and profound mental retardation
1974 Council transitions all programs for school aged children to public schools
1975 Council starts Kentucky's first and only Citizen Advocacy program
1979 Council operates New Neighbors program, offering creative new residential choices and respite care options
1980's Council establishes community programs: Community Living, Louisville Diversified Services, Custom Quality Services, and enTECH (Enabling Technologies)
1994 Council opens the Western Kentucky Assistive Technology Center (WKATC) in Murray, Kentucky
1998 Council develops and adopts long-range plan to accomplish mission
2000 Council organizes Coalition for Quality and Choice and HB144 becomes law
2002 Council celebrates 50th Anniversary, launching Leadership and Advocacy Center
